Resort Report: Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort

Hacienda Del Sol Tucson

Located on 34 acres near Sunrise & Swan, Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort is a historic gem of a property with breathtaking views of the Catalinas and a charming intimate atmosphere.

Originally built in 1929 as a girls school by John and Helen Murphey, Hacienda del Sol operated as a boarding school for young ladies until 1942. Elite families from the east coast would send their daughters to live and learn in Arizona. Later, the ranch became a resort where many famous celebrities have stayed over the years - including John Wayne, Clark Gable, Howard Hughes, and Katherine Hepburn.

Don't forget to bring your camera because there are plentiful picturesque spots - vibrant flowers in full bloom, abundant cacti, perfectly manicured green lawns, bubbling fountains, and noteworthy architectural details.

ROOMS

Rooms range in price from $149-$650/night, depending on size of room (standard guestroom, suite, or private casita) and season of stay.

The casitas are especially nice if you are traveling with a large family or group because they have many VRBO features: a kitchenette (refrigerator, microwave, sink, and dishes), a dining table, a sunken bath tub with jets, a private patio, and a carport.

The newest rooms at Hacienda del Sol are the Sonoran Rooms (pictured right). Every Sonoran room has a patio with spectacular views of the mountains or cityscape and several have private, outdoor showers.

DINING

Hacienda del Sol has two restaurants on-site.

The Grill is an upscale fine dining restaurant with breathtaking views and a gourmet New American menu (using ingredients from an on-site organic garden). Over 700 wines are also available for pairing with your meal. Don't miss Sunday Brunch at The Grill, every Sunday from 10:00am to 2:00pm, $60+/person. Delicious entrees and homemade desserts in a relaxing and romantic environment.

Terraza Garden Patio & Lounge offers al fresco dining and live music. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday, 3-6pm (4-7pm during the summer months).

A Children's Menu is available at both restaurants.

ON-SITE ACTIVITIES

Guests can enjoy three swimming pools, three hot tubs, a small fitness center, a spa house with men's and women's lockers, six treatment rooms including a couples room, a portfolio of wellness classes, a gift shop, and on-site art/sculpture pieces. History tours and nature walks are also available to enhance your experience.

As for the smallest of guests, kids will enjoy taking a dip in the pool, playing lawn games, and dancing on the green grass in the inner courtyard. Note that Hacienda del Sol is an adult-oriented resort (best suited for anniversaries, date nights, and couples getaways), but families are welcome.
