Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra Presents an Enchanting Concert Program

February 2, 2025 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

$28 – $35

The Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra (SASO), under the direction of Maestro Linus Lerner, proudly presents the next installment in its celebrated season, "Musical Journeys." This concert will take place on Saturday, February 1 at 7:00 PM at DesertView Performing Arts Center in SaddleBrooke and Sunday, February 2 at 3:00 PM at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, offering audiences an unforgettable program of diverse and masterful works.

Leroy Anderson: The Waltzing Cat
This whimsical gem brings to life the elegance and playfulness of a feline in a waltz, charming audiences with its delightful melodies and lighthearted spirit.

Wilhelm Stenhammar: Piano Concerto No. 2
Wilhelm Stenhammar was one of the most important Swedish composers, and also the foremost Swedish pianist of his time. Dating from early in the twentieth century, this concerto blends the romantic musical style of Johannes Brahms with moments of lightness and color, reflecting the fact that it was written while the composer was visiting Italy. This performance will feature the acclaimed Italian pianist Paolo Scafarella.

Richard White: Elegy for Juliet (’tis a gift)
This work by Tucson composer Richard White, who plays viola with SASO, is a heartfelt tribute to his late wife, Juliet Niehaus, who passed away from a neurodegenerative disease in January 2024. Composed in just 27 days, the piece blends the Shaker tune "Simple Gifts," a wedding memory, with echoes of "When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever." Through moments of darkness and tenderness, it captures the profound sorrow and enduring love of their shared journey.

Sergei Prokofiev: Lieutenant Kijé
Prokofiev’s witty and vivid suite narrates the curious tale of an imaginary soldier, with colorful orchestration that captures moments of humor, drama, and intrigue.

Georges Enescu: Romanian Rhapsody No. 1
An exhilarating tribute to Romanian folk music, this iconic rhapsody dazzles with its vibrant rhythms and sweeping melodies, culminating in a rousing finale.

“This program reflects the heart of our Musical Journeys season—a celebration of music’s ability to transport and connect us,” said Maestro Linus Lerner. “These works highlight the artistry of the orchestra and the power of live performance.”

Don’t miss this chance to join the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra on a journey through humor, beauty, and passion in music.
