A fun and creative event where participants race decorated pumpkins that have been transformed into makeshift race cars! Each participant designs and decorates their pumpkin, then sends it down a sloped track for a friendly competition. Please note: You must make your own pumpkin racer and bring it to the event.
All ages are welcome, but minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
This is a free event, but pre-registration is required.
For more information, please email Corey Martinez, Parks Area Supervisor, at [email protected]
Rules
Racer must be built from a single pumpkin. (Pumpkin may be hollowed out, but it must retain shape and can not be weighed down)
Racer must be created by inserting two independent axles through the pumpkin, with wheels attached to the axles.
Pumpkins cannot be attached to a prefabricated chassis of any kind (Skateboard, Stroller, Tonka Truck Etc.) No Power assisted racers, no motors, batteries, fans, pyrotechnics or explosives. Derby pumpkins must be gravity powered only. Decorate your pumpkin to be a crowd pleaser!
Pumpkin can have a stuffed “driver” inserted into hollow.
Tips
A bigger or heavier pumpkin does not equal a faster pumpkin.
Make sure the wheels spin freely and do not lock up.
Make sure the pumpkin is elevated off of the ground. Clearance is your best friend for a faster pumpkin.
Make sure the pumpkin is centered on its axles, otherwise your pumpkin might run into a wall. If it’s too heavy or light on one side, your pumpkin might not survive.
Make sure axles and wheels line up with each other.
